It’s been awhile since I’ve actually watched an episode of SPONGEBOB and, frankly, I’ve never really been a huge fan of the series. I have to admit, though, that the creative minds behind the show do manage to pull off a few really cool (and genuinely funny) episodes every once in awhile. Most recently, they teamed up with the stop motion animators at Screen Novelties for a brand new – and VERY cool – Spongebob TV Christmas Special (It’s A SpongeBob Christmas!).
As one might expect from a studio like Screen Novelties, the Spongebob special features several heart-warming nods to Christmas specials of the past – including Rankin Bass classics like Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. However, clocking in at a mere 30 minutes, the special seems rather short and the plot almost too simple:
Plankton turns everybody in Bikini Bottom from nice to naughty by feeding them his special jerktonium-laced fruitcake all in an effort to get his Christmas wish–the Krabby Patty formula.
Still, I’m excited to support Screen Novelties and see how this special turns out. It’s currently available on DVD, but the television premiere won’t be until November 23 (11/23) on CBS – an interesting choice considering the Nickelodeon premiere isn’t until Sunday, December 9th.
