Waaaaay back in 2012 we caught a glimpse of PigGoatBananaMantis!, a pilot originally produced two years earlier (2010) by artists Dave Cooper, Johnny Ryan and animator Nick Cross. At the time, Cross would only say that it was done “for a US network.” Regardless of what network he was alluding to at the time, it would seem that Nickelodeon is the one to snatch it up as they recently announced that the pilot for the series (renamed Pig Goat Banana Cricket) will air on Thursday, July 16, at 9:30p.m. (ET/PT).
While the show seems to carry some of the edgy absurdity of Ryan (Blecky Yuckerella, Prison Pit) and Cooper’s (Futurama, Puke and Explode) previous work, it’s undoubtedly been carefully curated for a much younger audience. And honestly, based on this short teaser, I’m totally cool with that. Censored or not there’s still a sense of manic immaturity that reminds me of other Nickelodeon shows like Ren & Stimpy and Invader Zim.
Meet four friends nature never intended—a pickle-obsessed pig , a goat with musical dreams, a banana who loves video games and a cricket with a crazy science lab. Pig, Goat, Banana and Cricket live in Boopelite, a town unlike anything you’ve seen before; where fruit can walk, animals can talk, and you can find all your pickle needs at the downtown Picklemart!
