Independently Awesome: 90s Video Game, Dinosaurland and Apocalyptic Ponies

It’s a brand new year, baby, and you know what that means… there’s even more indie-inspired goodness popping up on Kickstarter and IndieGoGo just itching to be funded by the masses (that’s us). Which begs the question: which ones are worth your attention? That’s where this column comes in. The following are hand selected projects by the team here at SKC that we think you should check out.

STRAFE®

Turning your desktop into a bonafide DeLorean, Pixel Titan’s STRAFE® is a direct line to 90s PC gaming that boasts “bleeding edge graphics and gameplay.” Don’t believe them? Check out the trailer above… go ahead, I’ll wait. Done? It gets even better.

Inspired by old school first-person shooters (FPS) like DOOM, QUAKE and WOLFENSTEIN 3D, Pixel Titans has set out to looks retro, plays modern and delivers ÜBER-GORE® in an ever-changing series of unforgiving levels where death means starting over from the beginning. Heads will surely explode.

A Walk Through Dinosaurland

Less on the violent side, but no less awesome, former TMNT artist Jim Lawson (see our interview) has a new project in the works. Specifically it’s a sequel of sorts to his previous graphic novel, Dragonfly which features a giant, anthropomorphized turtle and a young boy named John who live in a world populated by dinosaurs.

While it appears to be mostly an educational romp through Dinosaurland, if this sequel is anything like the original there will be plenty of adventure as well. In fact, when you think about it this book is basically Jurassic Park for kids… but with a GIANT TALKING TURTLE. Yeah, chew on that for a bit.

Four Horsies of the ‘Pocalypse

Bronies beware! Bigshot Toyworks is ushering in the ‘Pocalypse with four My Little Pony themed collectible figures: Calamity (Pestilence), Raven (Famine), Clash (War) and Ghost (Death). Another follow-up crowdfunding campaign, Bigshot Toyworks’ previous Pony parody, Little Maddie, raised almost $40K and more than a few toy collecting eyebrows.

I’m not even a huge fan of MLP stuff and these figures look pretty freaking rad to me! Be sure to check out the project page for tons of 3D models, character bios, paint master prototypes and more.
