It’s not often that we get any new animated holiday specials these days, but it looks like this year we’re actually getting TWO of them courtesy of NBC! The first one we mentioned is Screen Novelties’ Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas and now How Murray Saved Christmas, a one-hour animated “musical” based on the book by writer/producer Mike Reiss (The Simpsons). While the premise may not be wholly original (grumpy old man must fill in for Santa), the execution and cast certainly are unique.
Starring a whole slew of familiar faces or, rather, voices—Jerry Stiller (“The King of Queens”) as Murray Weiner, Sean Hayes (“Sean Saves the World”) as Edison Elf, Jason Alexander (“Seinfeld”) as Doc Holiday, Dennis Haysbert (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “24”) as the Narrator, Kevin Michael Richardson (“Family Guy,” “The Cleveland Show”) as Santa Claus and John Ratzenberger (“Monsters University,” “Cheers”) as Officer Bender—the story “centers on cranky deli owner Murray Weiner (Jerry Stiller), who is forced to fill in for Santa (Kevin Michael Richardson) one Christmas and, with the help of Edison Elf (Sean Hayes).”
Props to NBC for keeping this annual tradition alive! The special premieres Friday, December 5 at 8/7c on NBC.
