Sorta. According to sources at Deadline, Sony Pictures has just walked away with the rights to a spec script called Winter’s Knight. Written by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton, Winter’s Knight is loosely based on L. Frank Baum’s 1902 book The Life And Adventures Of Santa Claus, which first saw film adaptation in 1985 courtesy of Rankin-Bass Productions and happens to be one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies to watch since I was a kid.
The original story has since been pilfered by a variety of production companies, poorly I might add, but it sounds as though Winter’s Knight may be taking a unique approach with Deadline describing it as: “the Viking-mythology-tinged origin story of St. Nick and Christmas.” Santa Claus and Valhalla? …okay, so maybe the connection to Baum’s The Life And Adventures Of Santa Claus is tenuous at best, but I’ve got to admit that it sounds like a badass flick!
