Fan Art Friday: Patrick Massobrio’s VIDEO HOME SLASHERS

I’ve heard a lot of different names bestowed upon VHS fans over the years; videovores, tapeheads, fanatics, “hey, you” – but never have I seen these terms used so creatively. Born out of nostalgia these VIDEO HOME SLAHERS (get it?) were created by French artist Patrick Massobrio and literally have VHS tapes for heads which have been painted and sculpted to depict a variety of classic horror movie slashers – Leatherface, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers – as well as other cult film icons (Pinhead, Snake Plissken, Phantom of the Paradise).

For more info on these pieces or Massobrio, be sure to check out this interview with the artist on Lunchmeat VHS.

[The] boxes allow you to make some pretty cool masks for characters like Jason or the Phantom of the Paradise. I paint the face on the cassette and, if needed, use some magnetic tape for the hair. Eyes are made of glass. Then, depending on the collection, the body is painted directly on canvas or then scanned and printed. Finally, added 3D elements are made of resin, silicone, leather or Plexiglas… Even in series that have printed elements, the VHS heads are entirely done by hand so always a little different, making every piece unique.
