On the Shelves: DVD Releases for April 03, 2012

Some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases for this week.

Torchwood: Miracle Day – This is essentially Torchwood Season 3. Unfortunately, I’m still in the middle of Season 2 so I haven’t seen this yet. I’ve not heard great things, but I don’t care. I will watch it when I finish Season 2 within the next 2 years.

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey – A lot of good documentaries out lately. This one provides a behind the scenes look at the guy who controls Elmo on Sesame Street. It’s also a really good look “behind the curtain” at the Jim Henson Workshop.

The Afflicted – This looks like it could be a fairly horrific B-level horror movie. And it stars everyone’s favorite Jason Vorhees, Kane Hodder. It’s about a woman who becomes obsessed with an evangelical preacher, goes crazy and begins torturing her family. Like I said, horrific.

Titanoboa: Monster Snake – No this isn’t one of those Z-level monster movies that have been all the rage lately. This is from the Smithsonian Channel and it’s about a prehistoric snake called Titanoboa that grew to be nearly 50ft long and 3ft in diameter. Like Indiana Jones, I hate snakes. They give me the heeby-jeebies. Just looking at this DVD cover is painful. However they also hold a morbid fascination over me.  So I will definitely check this out, if even through the fingers of my hands over my face.

Howl’s Moving Castle – Mayazaki’s classic finally hits Blu-Ray. If you haven’t checked out any of Mayazaki’s movies, I strongly suggest you do. We covered Mayazaki’s Spirited Away on Episode 24 of the Nerd Lunch Podcast and it was great. So are all of his other movies. Seriously, check them out.  Especially if you enjoy great animation and really good storytelling.  Mayazaki is considered the Japanese Walt Disney.

Misfits Series 3 – I’ve heard nothing but good things about this show but I’ve never seen it. It seems to be a British version of NBC’s defunct Heroes. Except the main characters are granted powers through an accident.  I’ll definitely be checking this out.

By the way, you guys should know that today is Atari National Pac-Man Day.
