Go Back to 8-bit with JunkBoy’s Modern Video Game “Demakes”

As much as video games have evolved, there’s still something to be said about those old 8-bit and 16-bit games you have stashed in the attic or on sale at ebay. One could could call it an art form, in fact, Swedish-based pixel pusher Marcus (aka JunkBoy) has made it just that with his “old school” renditions of some of today’s most popular video games including Brutal Legend, Arkham Asylum, Bayonetta, Guitar Hero, Killzone, Resident Evil 5 and more for Level magazine!

“A fairly big chunk of Level, the magazine where they were originally published, is made up of a retro gaming section and the ‘demakes,’ or ‘premakes’ as we call them, are one of those pages,” says Marcus in this August 2010 interview. “When we pick a game to ‘premake’ we mainly look at what is being released in that particular month, or what kind of trends we are seeing. Sometimes though I will just make whatever I feel like on that particular day. From a highbrow perspective, you could describe the premakes as a way to contextualize contemporary games, by literally showing their historic roots. But that would be silly and pretentious, so the truth is more that we just think it’s a fun thing to do.”
