Independently Awesome: Torsobear, Newman and Tara Normal

Oh, the graphic novel goodness we have in store for you this edition of Independently Awesome. Teddy bears in prison, short heroes fighting tall monsters, a paranormally kick-ass goth girl… oh yeah, we’ve got that. Let’s jump right in!

Torsobear Volume 2: All Stitched Up

The book two anthology takes us back to the land of Toyburg, where all manner of toys live, work and… well, get into big-time trouble. That’s where the law comes into play, and no one is better suited to walk these mean streets than Detective Ruxby Bear. But what happens when he gets framed and sent to the dark toy prison known as The Corner?

Brett Uren has put together another fantastic group of creators to tell these tall tales. If the book is half as good as the first volume, it’ll be one of the best of this year – so go scoop one up before this thing turns into a pumpkin on June 1st. They’ve had plenty of last-minute fun going on. too – sketch giveaways, interactive character building and free books for referrals – so there’s plenty of incentive!

Newman: Volume One

What the frak is a Newman, you ask? No, it’s not the further adventures of Seinfeld’s pesky neighbor. It’s a webcomic about ANOTHER Newman – this one works for the Creature Removal Department and he’s… very different indeed. So, what can you expect in this print run of the first volume? According to the Kickstarter page, we can expect “Romance, monster slaying, apocalypse cults, and one poorly timed Dracula attack.”

While the artwork has a lighter tone and there are plenty of humorous moments, Newman has a great central storyline to tie it all together with plenty of adventure and giant beasties. I’m not gonna lie to you – the fact that it’s going to be a physical book makes my geeky heart squee a little. It looks gorgeous on a computer screen, but nothing beats actually holding a comic and smelling the fresh ink. *sniff* Oh yeah, that’s the stuff!

Tara Normal: Season of Evil

While stories about a strong female lead kicking some serious monster booty is nothing new (Buffy, Hack/Slash, iZombie are just a few examples), Tara Normal is carving out her own slice of paranormal badassery. A follow-up to Charlton the Resurrector (Booke One), Tara Normal: Season of Evil is an anthology featuring 10 different glimpses into Tara’s world by multiple creators with zombie dogs, baby Cthulhus, yetis and… TV stars?! Yep, this one’s got it all!

With nine days to spare this book’s already hit the funding goal, so you’re GUARANTEED to get this full-color, 100-page slice of horror graphic novel awesomeness.
