Penny Dreadful Season One

Some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases this week.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) – This movie is awesome. A perfect capper to the original X-Men movies from the early 2000s and a great continuation of the newer “The New Class” movies. I highly recommend it. Plus, it’s great to see much of the old X-Men actors back for one last ride.

Penny Dreadful: Season One – This Showtime series looks pretty awesome. Imagine those old 40s monster rally movies like House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula, but done today in a more gothic and less comedic way. I don’t have Showtime so I haven’t seen this yet but I’m definitely going to give it a shot now that it’s on home video.

Dracula: Season One – I was actually very intrigued by this show. I want a new Dracula and I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers. However, I wasn’t intrigued enough to actually watch it, I guess. I did DVR it, but wound up deleting it. I’ll probably give it a few episode chance because the premise is somewhat cool in that Dracula returns centuries after the events of the book to exact revenge on humans.

Mercenaries – I’m not sure what’s taken so long to get a “female Expendables” but it took garbage studio Asylum to get it done. That’s an impressive list of ladies in this cast. They aren’t missing much. Maybe Sigourney Weaver or Gina Carrano? But those are probably too difficult a “get” for Asylum. This movie can’t be any worse than that first Expendables.

Penny Dreadful started out with a good amount of action but then went more with characters. Not a bad thing but it might be a bit too Gothic to hold my attention, have to wait for season 2.
