On the Shelves: Home Video Releases for Jan 28, 2014

Some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases this week.

Dario Argento’s Dracula 3-D (2012) – Famous Italian director Dario Argento unleashes his version of Bram Stoker’s classic monster starring Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing, Asia Argento as Lucy and Thomas Kretschmann as Dracula.  It was not reviewed very well, but I have to say I’m at least curious.

Downton Abbey Season 4 (U.K. Edition) – I am 100% on board with this show. It’s amazing. My wife and I are watching this as it airs on PBS. Episode 4 just aired on Sunday. However, I’ll be grabbing the last two discs of this set off Netflix so we can power through the next 5 episodes without having to wait 5 more weeks to see the end. This show is so good and this season is no exception.  Love it.

Sword Masters: Death Duel (1977) – A couple of the Shaw Brothers’ Sword Masters series are being released this week.  Death Duel is about a master swordsman constantly defending his skills against everyone who wants a piece of him.  Another release, Legend of the Bat (1978), is about a warrior traveling to Bat Island for adventure but discovers a criminal martial arts underground run by the mysterious Bat Prince.

Stonados (2013) – Stones + Tornados = Stonados. This happened.  And they’ve managed to conceive of one of the least interesting “disaster matchup” movie concepts I’ve ever heard.

Dangerous Beauties Collection: Malibu High (1979)/Hustler Squad (1976) – I love these 70s grindhouse/genre collections.  Malibu High is about a girl who’s boyfriend just dumped her and has become tired of bad grades and no money.  So she becomes a prostitute and sells herself to the faculty for better grades.  Sounds amazing.  The Hustler Squad is also known as “The Dirty Half Dozen”.  A group of lady assassins are trained and placed in a bordello in the Philippines in order to attempt to kill several Japanese generals and an admiral.  Again…AMAZING.

90s Night In – 8-Movie Set – Here’s a  pretty eclectic collection of 90s movies, most of which I’ve never heard of. I know Threesome and Go!. That’s about it.  Looking at the rest, how have I never seen Wilder Napalm?  Check out the trailer.  Two brothers who have the power to create fire with their minds fight over a girl who is….an arsonist.  #MindBlown

I’m gonna have to check out those 70s flicks. I recently saw The Unholy Rollers and it was a fun time.

The “Dracula” show Kretschmann is on is way more interesting. (Although that one doesn’t follow the book much, either.)
