When I first got word that Joe Simko and the mad minds over at WAX EYE were making a video game I was more than interested. Simko, who’s worked on various parody series including Garbage Pail Kids and Wacky Packages, first launched the CEREAL KILLER brand of trading cards/sticker via Wax Eye back in 2011. Since then the line has expanded to include a Series 2, multiple variants/subsets and now a video game!
Called CEREAL BOOM, the new game takes the Cereal Killer series and brings it into the mobile world as both an interactive game and digital card series. The concept behind the game is simple enough: “enough good food to Zomba Crunch, Apple Drac, or Eye Pop, (each twisted versions of regular cereal mascots) before time runs out and you’ll create a CEREAL BOOM!” This “boom” is often a grotesque explosion of vomit, brains or some other bodily fluid – which only adds to the fun factor.
Beating a level, which mostly entails feeding your monster enough “good food” (like glowing, green brains with legs) will net you a random assortment of double-sided digital trading cards, each packaged in a foil wrapper that can be peeled to reveal your prize. An unnecessary, but greatly appreciated touch that any collector would enjoy. If you’re interested in giving it a shot, the game is FREE to download on iPhone or iPad with one monster. This game was created with one goal in mind: to share the love of collecting trading cards with a digital generation. All the characters are based on Joe Simko’s Cereal Killers trading card art. Joe is known as the artist of Topps’ Garbage Pail Kids, Wacky Packages, NY Gotham Girls Roller Derby posters, and Van’s Warped Tour among others.
