Few stories in the old United States are as popular around this time of year as the one of a particular school teacher and the ghastly headless apparition that relentlessly haunts him. For centuries Washington Irving’s immortal Legend of Sleepy Hollow has stood as a cultural favorite among traditional American horror stories, even influencing popular culture – from Disney’s classic adaptation to The Real Ghostbusters. There’s even a Tim Burton movie dedicated to the tale of Ichabod and his galloping, otherworldly adversary. Seeing as how NBC and A&E clearly already have dibs on infamous human killers, FOX has decided to grab up The Headless Horseman for their own Sleepy Hollow TV series!
Set to premiere on September 16th, Sleepy Hollow looks to be a bizarre yet action fueled story in which Ichabod Crane is not a teacher but an agent of the American Revolution. His nemesis, the “Headless Horseman,” is a British agent beheaded by his own hand as he was killed. Fast forward to 2014 and Ichabod has been brought back to life in the modern day town of Sleepy Hollow, along with his nemesis the Headless Horseman, and must team up with Sheriff Abbie Mills to unravel the mystery of why all this has happened. The series then becomes a race against time fueled by Ichabod’s acute, yet humorous, observations of the modern world (racism, gender discrimination, etc) while the duo also try to link a series of strange cases left by Mill’s predecessor.
Will Sleepy Hollow deliver on its promise of being a well-paced, intriguing action thriller mixed with humor? I, personally, can’t wait and see!
