On the Shelves: DVD Releases for Mar 26, 2013

Some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases this week.

Phantasm II (Collector’s Edition) – Shout! Factory has been killing it with these Blu-Ray Special Edition releases they’ve been putting out of cult horror films. They’ve also done awesome releases for movies like They Live and The Island and they will soon release a Blu-Ray of Ninja III: The Domination in which I am nearly wetting my pants with anticipation.

From Beyond (Collector’s Edition) – Another awesome Shout! Factory Blu-Ray package.

Terminator Anthology – All four Terminator movies in one Blu-Ray package. If you want them.  I own the first and third one on DVD and the second one on Blu-Ray.  Honestly, I really only like T2.  I never watch any of the others.  And I’ve seen Salvation only once and I have no desire to repeat that viewing.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXVI – I love these awesome collections of MST3K movies.  This particular volume contains the movies The Magic SwordDanger!! Death Ray, The Mole People and Alien From L.A.  All solid episodes but, for those that don’t know, Alien from LA is especially good.  It’s a movie from 1988 starring Kathy Ireland about a nerdy woman who accidentally discovers the lost city of Atlantis.  It’s amazingly bad and the MST3K crew are especially good about making fun of the more ridiculous moments.  ESPECIALLY the ending.

Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot: The Complete Series – Looking through Amazon’s list of new releases, I stumbled upon this little title and I had to run to YouTube to see WTF was up.  How have I never heard of this show before!? Check out the first episode here.  It’s seven different kinds of awesome.  As a big fan of Space Giants, I’m not sure how this particular show escaped me.

Continuum: Season One – I’ve been seeing ads for this all over the place. I honestly can’t say that I even know what it is.  However Rachel Nichols is in it (HOT) and the plot revolves around time travel. I’m in.  According to Amazon the show is about terrorists who mistakenly take a cop (Nichols) back with them in time.  A stranger in a strange land, she works with the local police to thwart their efforts to change future events.  Sounds like a pretty cool twist on the regular cop show.

The Frankenstein Theory – This has an interesting premise. A university professor is suspended from his job for his outlandish ideas, one of which is that Shelley’s Frankenstein is actually based on a real experiment that was disguised as fiction.  So the professor gathers a team and heads to the Arctic to search for evidence of his theory.  I will watch this, but I have my expectations in check because like the original Frankenstein experiment, this could go horribly awry.

Sexsquatch: The Legend Of Blood Stool Creek – This exists and I am simultaneously repulsed and fascinated. I can’t bear to look but I must watch.
