On the Shelves: DVD Releases for Jan 08, 2013

Wow.  It took me like three times typing that title to get the year correct.  Hard to believe it’s 2013.

Now, some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases this week.  And, since I missed the last few weeks, I’ll include a few previously released stuff as well.  Still not a lot of stuff in these early weeks of the new year, but that’ll pick up soon.

Dredd – I have not seen this, but I really want to. I love the idea of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd and it looks pretty awesome.

Looper – I have seen this. And it’s awesome. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is great as is Bruce Willis. I even really liked Emily Blunt (but then, I normally do). Just a great little sci-fi flick.

Frankenweenie – Tim Burton returns to his very first short film and remakes it as a feature length animated movie.  I haven’t seen it, and I’m not really dying to see it.  I’m not as enthralled with the original short film like everyone else on Earth seems to be.  But I’ll eventually watch this as I am a fan of Mr Burton.

House at the End of the Street – A single mom (Elisabeth Shue) and her teenage daughter (Jennifer Lawrence) move next to a house in which a grisly murder took place. A young girl murdered her parents, leaving only her brother alive. And he still lives in the house. When the brother befriends the the teenage daughter, details of the grisly murder next door become revealed.

Goonies / Gremlins / Gremlins 2: The New Batch [Blu-ray] – This is actually a really good triple feature Blu-Ray for only about $17.

  • Some nice choices on here! Dredd is a great film, though I did wish it had a bit more flair (?) especially in regards to the main villain of the movie. Same sort of thing with Frankenweenie… it’s probably Burton’s most easily likable effort since Nightmare Before Christmas, but the ending is such a copout.

  • Dredd needs a sequel so badly, with a bigger budget etc. so the sand pit he gets to play in can be expanded. Sadly that is not going to happen. 🙁

  • Dredd was great except for one thing… just something that wouldn’t happen in the comic book.

    Looper just pissed me off.

  • Looper was quite good. I wouldn’t buy it though!
