On the Shelves: DVD Releases for Aug 28, 2012
Some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases this week.

Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions – You can now buy these extended editions separately instead of just in a bundled package. I enjoy parts 1 and 3, but didn’t really love 2. Same for the books. I’m just not a huge LOTR fan, I guess. However, I love The Hobbit and I’m so psyched for the movies. In many ways, I wished they had started with The Hobbit movies instead of this trilogy.

The Walking Dead Season 2 – Much to my shame, I have not watched a single episode of this show. I hear it’s great, but I also hear it’s not as good as everyone says it is. The first season is on Netflix Streaming, so I need to check it out. Unfortunately for this show, my wife and I are currently hooked on Breaking Bad, so it’ll have to wait.

Universal 100th Anniversary Collection – More awesome classic releases for Universal’s 100th birthday celebration. You can get two Hitchcock classics, Vertigo and The Birds, as well as Scarface and Jurassic Park: Augmented Reality Edition.

Battleship – I hear this movie is stupid fun. It certainly looks like it. I love Liam Neeson, but Taylor Kitsch and Rhianna? Not sold on them.

Once Upon a Time: The Complete First Season – I think this looks interesting. These shows based on fairy tales intrigue me. This and that Grimm show. I’ll have to give them a try.

The Pirates: Band of Misfits – The trailers and ads for this movie look hilarious. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein – Awesome! A nice, high def, Blu-Ray transfer for this classic monster movie. I love the classic Universal monster movies, but I’m not going to lie, this one isn’t my favorite. I’ve tried to watch it a few times. I just can’t get into it and don’t think it’s as funny as it could have been. However, this movie is essentially the very last of the classic Universal monster movies, so it has its place in history. And I’ll keep trying to watch it. It’s bittersweet to see Bela Lugosi as Dracula and Lon Chaney, Jr as Wolf Man for the last time.

IN THIS ISSUE: Strange Kid runs amok in 80s/90s TV series! Jason Edmiston, Matthew Allison, Drew Rausch, David DeGrand, Brent Engstrom...

I can’t wait to see the Pirates!
I am watching OUAT as we speak now…and the blooper reel is pretty darned funny.
(Seriously, Robert Carlyle giving a big MWAHAHAHA! evil laugh just puts a smile on my face…)
Of the two fairy tale inspired shows last season, I think OUAT is my favorite. I really like the way they handle the stories between worlds. Be interesting to see where it goes this season. Don’t get me wrong, I like Grimm also but I didn’t think they built on the overrall story arc week to week as much as they could have.
