What If… John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’ Was An Action Figure Line?
Remember the glory days of toydom? I’m talking, of course, about the 80′s and 90′s, two decades where it was considered ok to market toys and cartoon series based off of violent, hard R-rated movies to kids. You know, films like Rambo, Toxic Crusaders, Robocop, Aliens, Predator and Terminator, all of which received their respective kid-oriented merchandising. It seemed every franchise was jumping aboard that hard plastic, missile-firing, bandwagon. Makes you think, though, doesn’t it? What other movies could have made the leap to pint-size action figure format?
Well, you weren’t the only one. How cool would it have been to have a series of G.I. Joe-like figures based off of John Carpenter’s horror classic, The Thing?! Completely awesome? Totally ridiculous?! Try ridiculously awesome, as proven by the fake “commercial” below. Dear lord… how I wish these were real. Sadly… their glory is only to be witnessed via video. Man, what I would give to have a grappling hook launching MacReady toy…
