On the Shelves: DVD Releases for Jun 5, 2012

Some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases for this week.

John Carter
John Carter – The troubled Disney action movie craps itself onto Blu-Ray today. While it bombed here in the US, it actually made $200 million+ overseas. In case you needed another reason to hate this movie, it’s this (and Battleship, to an extent) that caused GI Joe: Retaliation to be delayed until next year.  I’ll actually watch this because I like the story of John Carter of Mars, but I remain unconvinced that Taylor Kitsch can carry this, or any, movie.

Journey 2
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island – Honestly, the first Journey movie with Brendan Frasier is a complete mess. However, the trailers for this one looked a lot better. And because they got Dwayne Johnson in here instead of Brendan, I actually want to watch it.

Safe House
Safe House – I thought this looked like a pretty good action movie. Denzel is always solid and I am a fan of Mr Reynolds (Green Lantern aside, of course). Unfortunately I’ve not heard anything about if this movie is good.  No one I know has seen it.

Beatles Yellow Submarine
The Beatles: Yellow Submarine – The Beatles trippy, experimental, drug induced fever dream hits Blu-Ray today. I bet the picture looks gorgeous, and the music is GREAT, but, I’m sorry, the movie itself is too weird for me.

Bad Ass
Bad Ass – A movie based on Epic Beard Man. It exists and it gets released today.

Dear God No!
Dear God No! – Another underground, grindhouse, 70s horror throwback a la Hobo with a Shotgun. This one is about murderous, raping bikers vs Sasquatch!  I am completely in love with that premise.

I think maybe one of the biggest problems with “John Carter” is that Disney didn’t bother to do much marketing and merchandising. Seriously, that was a film so toyetic that it was crying out for action figures. WTH. I’m hoping this new studio head will fix the problem of making great genre movies that don’t catch on. 🙁 (Come on, they make sequels to the crappy stuff like “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”, I’d rather see “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” continued. :/ )

Didn’t see “Journey 2”, I wanted to, although I don’t know why they felt they had to recast the kid’s mom with a more recognizable actress. That stuff bugs me sometimes…

  • Joanna I completely agree with you about crappy Disney sequels. I too would like to see more Sorceror’s Apprentice as opposed to another crappy sequel to Lion King or Bambi.

  • Can’t wait to see John Carter!
