Light-hearted horror, Sometimes NSFW, Haiku Comics found
The gentle art of the seventeen-syllable English haiku gets mashed together with zombies, werewolves, aliens and naked coeds in Robert and Nathan Olsen’s brilliant webcomic, Haiku Comics.
Each Haiku Comics strip consists of three panels of graphic grotesquery, followed by an original haiku poem. Despite the horrific themes covered by the ‘toons, the art is playful and cartoonish, and the poems are always imaginative and display a wicked sense of humor. Don’t let the style of these comic strips fool you though – they’re not for kids, and the Olsen brothers aren’t afraid to show a little blood or nudity.
While the idea of pairing up a comic strip with haiku poetry is not new, the Olsens’ take on the horror genre is refreshingly unique. By using poetry as a caption for the gruesomeness of their comic strips, the Olsens make their humor gags strangely more compelling.
Unfortunately, updates to the Haiku Comics website have become increasingly less frequent. However, the sizable archive and quality of past strips make the site worth checking out. See for yourself at www.haikucomics.com.
