Weird World of Webcomics: Mike Maihack’s Cleopatra in Spaaaace!
Before ruling ancient Egypt as Pharaoh, Cleopatra was a planet-hopping teeny-bopper with a penchant for blasting alien scum. Or at least, that’s the set up for Mike Maihack’s entertaining webcomic Cleopatra in Spaaaace!
Maihack chronicles the journey of 17 year-old Cleo, as she finds herself a long way from home. There’s apparently a prophecy floating around the galaxy that Cleo is some kind of savior, destined to end the tyranny of the technologically advanced Xerx race. So a clandestine organization called P.Y.R.A.M.I.D. (Pharaoh Yasiro’s Research And Military Initiative of Defense) transports Cleo to the future where she is forced to fight baddies, all while trying to get through school, avoid detention and deal with the other problems of a typical teen girl. Oh, and her best friend is a talking space cat.
I guess the whole “girl in space” angle has become a kind of a theme here with last week’s review of “Red’s Planet.” And just like “Red’s Planet,” “Cleopatra in Spaaaace!” is another light-hearted adventure tale that packs in some fun alien butt-kicking. The artwork is top notch, and Maihack’s pencils and inks are stylized and energetic – reminiscent of Darwyn Cooke. The drawing style mixes perfectly with the breezy pace of the storyline, making for a fun and exciting read.
Cleo herself is an engaging and endearing character, and her spunky attitude adds an element of humor to the story. She’d fit right in with the likes of Han Solo or Flash Gordon.
Maihack took a brief hiatus from updating his webcomic at the end of last year, but will be back with Chapter 3 soon. In the meantime you can read Chapters 1 and 2 (and check out an awesome gallery of fan art) at www.cowshell.com/cleopatra.
