On the Shelves: DVD Releases for Jan 10, 2012

Some of the DVD/Blu-Ray releases for this week.

Boardwalk Empire
Boardwalk Empire The Complete First Season – I’ve never watched this and literally have no desire to.  It sounds like The Sopranos: Atlantic City.

Moneyball – Sort of based on a true story about Billy Beane who, when forced to think outside the box to field a winning team on a budget, turns to a number crunching economist to find hidden baseball talent. I think this looks really good. At least, the trailer looked good. I hear it’s sort of a “slow burn”, in that there’s not a ton of action, much like the game of baseball itself.  But I plan on seeing it.

Killer Elite
Killer Elite – So much potential. So little living up to it. This is the best movie Hollywood can create for stars DeNiro, Statham and Owen? Bah.

GI Joe Series 2
GI Joe Series 2 Season 1 – After GI Joe: The Movie, Hasbro severed ties with Sunbow Productions who had been producing all of the GI Joe cartoon stuff up until that point. Hasbro hired DIC Entertainment to continue the GI Joe story and created this giant bag of boring forgetfulness.

Scorpion King 3
The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption – They made a third Scorpion King movie? I barely remember the second one.

Waterworld (Universal’s 100th Anniversary) – It’s Universal Studios’ 100th anniversary and they celebrate by releasing Waterworld on Blu-Ray? Really? To be fair, they did release a bunch of other pretty awesome movies. However, I personally would like to see a nice Blu-Ray release of the Universal horror classics like Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolf Man. None of which, by the way, have hit Blu-Ray yet.  I also want Son of Frankenstein and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man on Blu-Ray, dammit.
