Weird World of Webcomics: Eric and Rob’s ‘Hatefarm’
HATEFARM is a webcomic that your high school economics teacher would probably hate – it’s crude, violent, and overtly sexual. In other words, it’s pretty awesome.
Creators “Eric” and “Rob” describe their creation as something of a “wildcard.” The comic is presented in a traditional-single-page format and is part gag-a-day, part biting social commentary, and part absurdist humor. While the writing can be scathingly harsh, the artwork is colorful and cartoony – providing a nice balance to the overall humor of the comic.
HATEFARM is at its best when lampooning society through a distortion of pop culture icons such as the video game Skyrim or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and while the comic usually maintains a one-off approach to its jokes, Eric and Rob have created a few fun and outrageous re-appearing characters in the form of “Mistress Missy” the porn/BDSM queen and “Walter” the shy necrophiliac.
The creators also give readers a clever opportunity to be featured in their comic – a donation gets your mug in one of their strips. Be careful though, because you don’t get to choose exactly how you’re depicted, so you might wind up being victimized by Missy or Walter.
As you probably already guessed, the comic is somewhat NSFW so it’s best not to read it during class/work/in front of small animals due to a heavy dose of violence and nudity (although sometimes the comic is completely harmless). Of course, sex and violence has never kept me from recommending something – so check it out. The comic updates about every 1-2 weeks and can be read at www.hatefarm.com.
