Bizarro Au Go-Go is a schlocky, psychotronic experience worthy of a feature length film (or anthology) in the vein of Troma Entertainment.

For those who are not aware, Cig Neutron is sculptor and special FX artist from parts unknown (also known as Culver City, CA). His co-conspirator, Rannie Rodil, is an equally mysterious model and photographer specializing in sexy, nerdy awesomeness. Recently, they joined forces with the fearsome “underground storybook generator” known as Ink Pen Mutations Press for a bizarre little book that more than lives up to its name.

While I had heard these names whispered in dark corners before I admit that I was wholly unprepared when they delivered upon my doorstep a copy of their latest book, Bizarro Au Go-Go, for review. After only reading the first 5 pages I was to oblige, giving myself in to the “Blood! Babes! And BEYOND!” that their press release proudly stated. Bizarro Au Go-Go is very much like an R-rated guide into the twisted minds of two individuals who have taken all of the fun parts from B-movie cinema (sexy girls and scary monsters) and spun it into an hour long special feature co-produced by Jim Henson and John Waters (with casting by Lloyd Kaufman).

The book itself is littered with fake movie ads (Prehairstoric) and hilariously racy photo-comics (Hobimbo the Clown) courtesy of Rodil set right alongside snippets from Neutron’s Encyclopedia Shittanica which documents in great detail the bizarre creatures that inhabit the creators’ strange fictional universe. You will literally see just about every 10 year old boy’s fantasy played out in 80+ pages of this book (Wha?! Not every little boy dreams of seeing a pig lady tearing the heart out of a cat burgular? Weirdos.).

If there was one weak point about Bizarro Au Go-Go I’d have to say that it’s the overall presentation. There’s so much phenomenal work on display, but there’s some odd font choices that prevent the book from having a cohesive experience. The Encyclopedia Shittanica references for instance could have used a little extra attention and there’s no table of contents so finding your favorite pages requires flipping through the entire book, but these are small crits for such a creative book chock full of craziness. It’s a world this strange kid feels right at home in.

To quote Keanu Reeves from just about any movie he's ever done: "Whoa." This is something right up my dark and twisted alley! Looks like a crazy mix up of horror burlesque and B-movies.

It really is a fun book. Besides, anything that can mix fake blood, hot babes and creepy puppets/sculptures like this is a-okay by me. ;)
