The Weird World of Webcomics: Chris Cantrell’s “The Deadlys”

In the spooky town of Necroblivion, monsters live surprisingly normal lives. Except for when they’re busy mass-murdering mortals!

Such is the set-up for Chris Cantrell’s webcomic, The Deadlys which Jack (think Jason Vorhees, only more jovial), Elizabeth (the vampy wife), and their daughter Morgan. Just recently, this creepy clan welcomed a fourth addition to their family — a son, Viktor. Think of it as the webcomic version of The Munsters’ extended family.

Cantrell’s work is consistently funny with some crisp line work — extremely impressive for a strip that updates daily! Since it’s a daily strip there is an extensive archive to dig through, but this shouldn’t intimidate new readers from jumping on board because Cantrell keeps his storylines simple. His website also offers a concise profile for each of his characters to help new readers get acquainted with his story.

One of Cantrell’s running gags I enjoy is the relationship between Jack and “Headless Horseman.” According to the website, the Horseman used to hold the record for most folks killed in a single Halloween season, until Jack came along and went on his own little homicidal spree. Ever since that day, the ol’ Horseman has desperately tried to regain his former notoriety only to have Jack get in the way.

The Deadlys updates daily with macabre humor and wit. Give it a read at
