“What Makes You a Strange Kid?” #6 featuring Chad Welch

Share your Strange Kid story with us and we’ll post your submission right here on the site. Feel free to include any links and childhood images you’d like.

When I was 6, a bad case of Strep Throat turned into a worse case of Scarlet Fever and Scarlatina, ultimately resulting in a couple weeks of misery and late nights. I remember staying up with my parents and watching The Carol Burnett Show, a nice hour long laugh fest that managed to keep my blues away. One Friday evening, after the Carol Burnett Show, a special Fright Night Feature pretty much sealed the deal for me: back to back airings of The Wolfman, starring Lon Chaney Jr., and Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein. I was hooked.

That late Friday night was a gateway drug into all things Science Fiction an Fantasy. I went from Transformers, He-Man, and Thundercats to The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and playing Dungeons and Dragons. Comics… Animation… I devoured it all, adding up to what I wanted to make my career: Cartooning and Illustration. I’m now a children’s Science-Fiction and Fantasy Illustrator, as well as working on some comics projects that hearken back to my old Monster Movie roots.

When I first discovered Strange Kids Club, it was like coming home to my childhood; everything that added up to me being “Me” was found here and I can’t recommend it enough.
