Web Series Wednesday: Amazing Mask

While technically not a series yet, the focus of this week’s Web Series Wednesdays was just too good to wait on. It’s got luchadors, a voodoo priestess, aliens, zombies, exploding body parts, and plenty of Looney Tunes style blood and guts that’ll make your eyes bulge out of sheer awesomeness. If you think I’m joking just check out the action-packed trailer above. Go ahead, I’ll wait… done? Good, let’s go then.

Simply entitled Amazing Mask, this in-progress web series was created by director (and likely mad genius) Dani Moreno of Chaparra Entertainment and is sure to have you begging for more. Luckily, there is a pilot episode that Moreno has released dubbed Amazing Mask vs The Supernatural Voodoo Woman. Let that title soak in for a moment and then check out the episode below.

Granted, I don’t speak Spanish so I can’t really explain or understand anything except “Amazing Mask,” but Moreno actually does a commendable job of managing to still make an entertaining 6+ minutes despite the language barrier. The Amazing Mask is so cool, he’s even got his very own “Legion of Bad Guys” who are out to get him. The stylization and cinematography of Amazing Mask is straight up from the Adam West Batman tv series that’s been given a bit of grindhouse glitter by way of White Zombie… it’s exactly what El Superbeasto should have been.

My knowledge of foreign language horror films is ashamedly weak to be sure, there’s probably only a handful that I could name. However, Moreno’s mix of horror and 80s nostalgia has me literally on the edge of my seat for more, especially having also seen his short film Martians Go Home!; a 30 minute sci-fi/horror love letter to 80s era pro-wrestling, video games like Zombies Ate My Neighbors, films like Plan 9 from Outer Space, and general nerd culture nostalgia.

Can I say that this is “AMAZING”?! I can’t wait to check out more of this series as its released. I’m always surprised to see such high production values in web series like this. I definitely agree with your point about Superbeasto, although I enjoyed it slightly more than Zombie’s other offerings.

I saw these a while ago, and thought they were awesome, but could only get a little information. I don’t think the pilot had been done at that time.

I don’t have any Spanish, but it is still incredibly enjoyable. It does remind me a bit of Mucha Lucha from Cartoon Network as well.

Dunia Montenegro, “Sugar Brown” the voodoo priestess, is a Brasilian porn star. She seems nice enough, despite rare English tweets (@duniamontenegro). Also, if you are on Netflix, or can find it elsewhere, check out “Sugar Hill” – a blaxploitation zombie film that may have had some influence on Moreno. If I remember correctly, it had a Mr. Samedi as well, a voodoo spirit whose function I do not remember. He’s the best part of that film, by the way.

Yeah, I really dig the hell out of Moreno’s work… just wish there was more of it available.

A porn star, huh? Go figure, haha. Thanks for the tip on “Sugar Hill,” it sounds real familiar, but I’ve never seen it before.
